The National Yiddish Book Center Great Jewish Books Summer Program brings together a select group of rising high school juniors and seniors on the campus of Hampshire College to read, discuss, argue about, and fall in love with powerful and enduring works of modern Jewish literature. Participants study with respected literary scholars, meet prominent contemporary authors, and connect with other teens from across the country. The 2014 program runs from Sunday, August 3 through Sunday, August 10. Every accepted participant receives a scholarship for the full cost of tuition, room, board, books, and special events.

At The Great Jewish Books Summer Program, Students Will:

  • Read and discuss fascinating works of modern literature by the likes of Franz Kafka, Sholem Aleichem, Philip Roth, Isaac Babel, Grace Paley, and many others…
  • Learn from outstanding teachers from top universities as well as from prominent and prize-winning writers (previous visiting writers include acclaimed novelists Allegra Goodman and Jami Attenberg, poet and critic Adam Kirsch, and graphic novelist and scholar Ilan Stavans)…
  • Develop skills for literary analysis and self-expression that will prepare them for college…
  • Meet other teenagers from across the country who love to read and who care about literature and Jewish culture…
  • Get an early taste of university life—see what it’s like to live, eat, and play on the campus of Hampshire College, one of America’s finest liberal arts institutions…
  • Discover how modern literature connects them to ancient traditions and contemporary ideas…
