In the wake of Hurricane Sandy that swept the east coast of the USA and the latest round of terrorist missile attacks on the south of Israel, we included in this issue a few items about Jewish educational institutions dealing with fear and destruction through positive action.

Day Schools Helping Day Schools Recover from Hurricane Sandy
In response to the havoc wreaked by Hurricane Sandy, the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE) called on the day school field to activate their social network of JDS and create an improvised program of school-to-school assistance to day schools in the New York Metropolitan area, and along the Eastern Seaboard, that have been devastated by Hurricane Sandy.
Rocket Attacks Close Schools in Southern Israel
Yesterday, students at World ORT- affiliated schools near the Gaza Strip took part in a national drill on how to continue their education when their schools are closed due to an emergency, such as an earthquake. Today, they’re doing it for real after a morning in which the ground shook with the impact of dozens of rockets fired by Hamas.
A MOFET Webinar - The Playful Digital Learning in the School – the Promise and the Challenges: A Case Study of Scratch and Israeli Schools
This free webinar, to be held on November 28, 2012, 7 PM Israel Time, 12 PM EST led by Dr. Oren Zuckerman of the IDC Media Innovation Lab in Herzlia will present several case studies of Scratch workshops in Israeli schools, and discuss the promise and the challenges of working with Scratch in schools. Scratch was carefully designed at MIT Media Lab based on constructionist values, promoting playful learning through open-ended exploration, and encouraging children to create content that is meaningful to them.
Updating the Israel/Diaspora Relationship
Larry Yudelson writes about the launching in northern New Jersey of iEngage, a program designed by the Jerusalem-based Shalom Hartman Institute to make Israel the topic of conversations about values rather than battles about politics. Eleven iEngage programs will be taking place in the area, most meeting on a weekly basis, and several bringing together rabbis and congregants from many synagogues. A total of 24 local rabbis are taking part. The program is being brought to northern New Jersey under a grant from the Adler Innovation Fund of the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey.
MOFET Teach 2013 – A Study Tour & Conference in Israel on Technological Systems in Education
On March 11-18, 2013, the MOFET International Channel will hold a study session in Israel on the topic of the development and integration of technological systems in education. The encounter will comprise two parts: a study tour on wheels and a conference at The MOFET Institute.
Jewish Life in St. Petersburg: A New Story
The JDC writes about the bubbling activity taking place at Yesod Jewish Community Center, the first-rate, central hub of Jewish life in the cosmopolitan city of St. Petersburg, Russia. Masha Aryeva, 39, the director of Yesod JCC for the last two years, tells about the inclusive atmosphere at Yesod where anyone of any age, background, or socioeconomic level is completely welcome—and that there is always something for everyone going on.
MOFET JTEC Israel Seminar for Community Leaders and Educators – Summer 2013
The MOFET JTEC Leadership Seminar in Israel for Jewish educators and community leaders (July 9, 2013 – July 18, 2013) will deal with issues and models of Jewish leadership throughout the history of the Jewish people, up to the present time, examining the participants' management and leadership styles and helping them promote community leadership in the roles they are currently performing or will perform in the future.
