To Include or Not to Include—This Is the Question: Attitudes of Inclusive Teachers toward the Inclusion of Pupils with Intellectual Disabilities in Elementary Schools
Numerous studies have emphasized the relationship between success of policies of inclusion and acceptance and accommodation of students with intellectual disabilities in mainstream settings and teachers’ positive attitudes toward them. Using semi-structured interviews and interpretive and constructivist strategies, the present study qualitatively analyzes the attitudes of 40 inclusive teachers regarding the inclusion of pupils with intellectual disabilities in mainstream elementary school settings in Israel.

Special in Uniform
In 2014, I left the army and joined Lt. Col Ariel Almog and, together with the Yad Layeled organization (and in partnership with JNF-USA), we founded the “Special in Uniform” program. The program integrates thousands of young people with disabilities into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and, in turn, into Israeli society. We see the inclusion of people with disabilities in the army as a way to help usher them into a self-sufficient life once they are discharged from the army. Our belief is that everyone belongs and has the right to reach his or her full potential. Special in Uniform focuses on the unique talents of each individual participant to help each one find a job that is a perfect fit for the individual’s skills within the IDF. The attention is on the ability, not the disability, of each individual, encouraging independence and integration into society.

Equality? Inclusion? Do They Go Hand-in-hand? Policy Makers' Perceptions of Inclusion of Pupils with Special Needs – An Exploratory Study
Using Critical Discourse Analysis, this study aims to elicit and expose the perceptions and attitudes of different policy makers in leadership positions at the Ministry of Education in Israel with regard to inclusion. The first stage of the research consisted of individual in-depth semi-structured interviews (N=8). In the second stage the participants (N=21) responded to a written questionnaire (Perceptions about Inclusive Education – PIE) and then took part in group discussions. The texts of the interviews and the group discussions were analyzed using qualitative measures.

Hebrew College Hosts 7th Annual GISHA Conference on Inclusion in Jewish Education
At a time when inclusion in Jewish Education is such an important topic for schools, synagogues, camps, classroom teachers, Hebrew College is hosting the 7th annual GISHA conference entitled ‘Excellence in Jewish Education: Inclusion’ on March 15-16 2015 at Hebrew College in Newton, Mass. As the rate of special learning needs identification increases and we all feel the responsibility to accommodate our families’ needs, this is a timely moment to participate with educational colleagues in learning more about the importance of inclusion, accommodation and special learning needs.

The 2015 Matan Institute for Education and Youth Directors
The Matan Institute is Matan’s flagship training program for Jewish professionals. An ongoing initiative, it builds upon Matan’s vision to change the landscape of Jewish education and its communal approach to children with special needs. The Matan Institute for Education Directors accepts a maximum of 25 Education Directors who commit to a two-day program at the beginning, and another two days at the end. In between they participate in four webinars that provide additional training, as well as work with an assigned Matan Mentor for ongoing support on a specific inclusion goal.

Q&A with the Founder of the New Jewish Day School for Kids with Learning Disabilities
This September, the Shefa School, a new pluralistic Jewish community day school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, welcomed its first students. Founded by Ilana Ruskay-Kidd, the former director of the Saul and Carole Zabar Nursery School at the JCC in Manhattan, Shefa is the only Jewish Day School for students with language-based learning disabilities. Shefa currently has 24 students enrolled in grades 2-5 and will ultimately enroll children in grades K-8.

The Matan Institute for Congregational School Teachers
The Matan Institute aims to provide educators with the tools they need to create inclusive Jewish communities for students with special learning needs. The Matan Institute for Congregational School Teachers, to be held on August 10, 2014 in New York City, is an intensive day of professional development focused on working with diverse learners within the congregational school classroom. The Institute will include interactive workshops on differentiated instruction, multi-modal learning and behavior management, among other topics.

Sixth Annual International GISHA Conference - The Inclusion Capacity: Building Capacity for Inclusivity in Jewish Education
The 2014 GISHA conference to be held at Hebrew College, Newton Centre, MA on May 4 – 5, 2014, will offer attendees the newest strategies and tools to help build the capacity to create inclusive classrooms and programs. Participants will hear from a variety of experts on topics such as: designing a multisensory classroom for teaching Hebrew reading; managing difficult behaviors in and out of the classroom; adapting behavior plans for supplementary school settings; Supporting and supervising educators in introducing differentiated learning into the classrooms and much more.

Special Needs Elementary Class Enters the Nipagesh Secure Social Network
Sarit Yaakov writes about Inbal Gal, special education teacher at the Alon Elementary School in Haifa, who introduced her class to the Nipagesh safe private social network for elementary schools before the summer vacation. After teaching the students how to sign up for Nipagesh, change profile pictures and create new pages, they went home and began to communicate with each other, create new pages and exchange ideas about their vacation plans.

Special-Needs Kids To Get N.Y. Jewish School Of Their Own
July Wiener writes about Ilana Ruskay-Kidd's plan to establish a pluralistic Jewish day school for children with learning and developmental delays. It would be the first of its kind in New York, and is believed to be the first stand-alone special-needs pluralistic Jewish day school in North America.
