Jewish Day School Leaders Go to Harvard
This summer, AVI CHAI is once again sponsoring Jewish day school leaders to participate in the Art of Leadership (AOL) and Leadership: An Evolving Vision (LEV) programs of the Principals’ Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. AOL participants completed the program the week of June 26, and LEV is taking place this week. A total of 36 leaders from across the US and Canada were chosen for the two cohorts.

The Jewish of Jewish Day Schools at the Prizmah Conference
The Prizmah Jewish Day School conference on February 5-7, 2017, in Chicago was a strong manifestation of the energy and excitement around the birth of Prizmah, the new central address for Jewish day schools, which staged this impressive gathering of more than 1000 stakeholders in Jewish education. The conference featured innovative shared experiences ranging from interactive improv workshops and custom sketches of Jewish day school life by Second City Works to a keynote lecture by world-renowned game designer and author Jane McGonigal, who encouraged the audience to consider: Why don’t our learning platforms work more like a game?

AVI CHAI Case Study Webinar Available: Hebrew Instruction at Jewish Day Schools
As evidenced by the high rate of participation in an AVI CHAI webinar yesterday, Hebrew instruction is a topic which elicits passion in many Jewish day school educators and leaders. The webinar – hosted by Dr. Michael Berger, AVI CHAI Program Officer – sought to illuminate the challenges and possibilities of JDS Hebrew language education in the JDS classroom. It was based off two case studies on this topic from “How Schools Enact Their Jewish Missions: 20 Case Studies of Jewish Day Schools”: “Meshuga La Davar: Hebrew,” about The Epstein School, by Dr. Michael Berger and Pearl Mattenson, and “A School That Places Israel at Its Center,” about the Golda Och Academy, by Dr. Jack Wertheimer, who served as Project Director of the case studies project. Speaking on the webinar were Stan Beiner and Dr. Joyce Raynor, former heads of Epstein and Golda Och, respectively. Beiner is now a consultant to non-profit organizations and schools, and Dr. Raynor currently serves as the Head of School of the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Educational Campus in Las Vegas, NV.

ISTE 2015 with the DigitalJLearning Network
This year, the DigitalJLearning Network (DJLN) sponsored 15 educators from 15 different institutions to attend the annual International Society for Technology in Education Conference (ISTE 2015), which took place from June 28-July 1 in Philadelphia. The premier educational technology conference, ISTE brought together thousands of educators from around the world to learn about this exciting area of growth in the world of education. Following the conference, DJLN has been featuring a variety of helpful resources and perspectives on their blog.

New Case Study Available: Zafon Elementary School: A Station-Rotation Model for Supporting 21st Century Learning
As part of AVI CHAI’s investment in the field of blended and online learning, we are excited to share with you the first in a series of four cases that study and document the experiences of day schools introducing and implementing this mode of learning. Our goal is to bring to life this innovative model and share real-life examples of the learning in action. “Zafon Elementary School: A Station-Rotation Model for Supporting 21st Century Learning,” describes an Orthodox, pre-K through 2nd grade school, which opened in 2012 with blended learning as a core element of its design. As the study’s author remarks, “This case is in many ways a study of implementation, of translating from a design on paper to the delivery of a program in practice.”

Day School Leaders at Harvard Ponder: How Will You Improve Your School This Year?
Summer is the perfect time for day school leaders to reflect, dream, and plan on how to strengthen and improve their schools in the coming year. To help them do just that, AVI CHAI sponsors selected day schools leaders to attend one of two leadership institutes at The Principals’ Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Fifteen leaders attended the summer’s first institute, Improving Schools: The Art of Leadership (AOL), from June 21-27, 2015. The goal of the institute was to help identify areas of school improvement, establish priorities, develop strategies, and build a base of support around a change initiative.

Uncommon Conversations at NAJDS 2015
This week, more than 1,000 Jewish day school educators, lay leaders, and administrators are gathering in Philadelphia for the North American Jewish Day School Conference 2015: Uncommon Connections. With a tagline of “Schools, systems and success,” the conference set out to “unleash the power of the multiple systems that comprise our Jewish day schools.”

Jewish Day School Census – A Roundup of Reactions
Last month, AVI CHAI issued our fourth census of Jewish day schools, conducted by Dr. Marvin Schick. The censuses have been conducted at four-year intervals, beginning with the 1998-99 school year. Some of the major census findings were: There is an overall increase in day school enrollment – by 70,000 students in the last 15 years. Most of that growth is in the Chassidic and Yeshiva World schools, which have grown by nearly 110% and 60% respectively. In the non-Orthodox sector, Community school enrollment has increased, whereas enrollment has declined in non-Orthodox schools overall. Non-Orthodox enrollment now constitutes 13% of all day school enrollment, a decrease from 20% as reported in 1998-99. There has been a flurry of commentary responding to the census release.

Supporting Different Elements of the Community: Interview with Dani Rockoff
I’m with the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy in Overland Park, Kansas, in the greater metro Kansas City area. The school was founded in 1966. It’s a community day school that recently affiliated with RAVSAK. It has 230 kids in grades K-12. I’m also the rabbi of an Orthodox synagogue in town. Five years ago, we started a Judaic studies track in the school called Matmidim, offering more rigorous Judaic studies developed by teachers who are observant. I’m now the director of the program.

Why Jewish Engagement, L’Dor Va’Dor?
Why and towards what ends are we engaging in Jewish engagement to begin with? To me, the answer is clear: We should engage the next generation around our powerful Jewish values and texts, which form the very foundation of the Jewish people. We should engage them around our raison d’être of being a unique and extraordinary people with a storied heritage and purpose in the world. I believe the Jewish people’s compelling value proposition comes through embodying, teaching, creating community around, and yes, engaging, in the texts and values, which are our birthright and heritage. It is vital that we start from this position of strength, of having something concrete and in fact precious to offer the next generation and all generations to come. Otherwise, we run the risk of becoming no more than the crumbling institutions referenced – and it will be no wonder when young Jews walk away.
